CBMC KANSAS/Kansas City held a II Timothy 2:2 Retreat at the Red Rock Guest Ranch north of Topeka, Kansas, February 27-29, 2020. The event was organized by CBMC Area Director, Gary Tenpenny. The purpose was to train, encourage and equip CBMC leaders to better carry out The Great Commission of making disciples. Twenty-three CBMC leaders from throughout the Midwest from Minnesota to Texas attended.

Business owner and author, Jim Mathis from Overland Park, Kansas was the musical guest.

The first speaker was Dallas/Fort Worth Senior Area Director, Stan Bower. Stan challenged those in attendance on the importance of one-on-one discipleship and being open to meeting with all sorts of men, from various backgrounds. He brought one of his Timothy’s, Michael Marraso, who had recently moved to Texas from London, England who shared his testimony of coming to Christ and moving to a new country and a new culture in the process.

Martin Hepp, President of the Oklahoma City engineering firm, CEC Corporation, and part of the Oklahoma City leadership team, told about incorporating faith in Christ within a large multi-location business of 212 employees. Alan Smith, Senior Area Director of CBMC Northland Minnesota shared his experiences with leading Peer Advisory Groups.

The CBMC National Coordinator for Young Professionals, John Scott Harrison, talked about how Young Professionals and businessmen under age 40, were being impacted by the ministry of CBMC and how those people were hungry for guidance in navigating the business world.

Long time CBMC leader and West Region Director, Paul Johnson, talked about CBMC ministry around the world, especially in Africa, and the Philippines. Paul’s testimony and stories reminded us what a life dedicated to ministry and to Christ looks like.

Evan Lange, who is the President of the Midwest Region of The Signatry, A Global Christian Foundation, spoke about generosity and the way that businesses can make significant impact on the world through planned giving.

Gary Tenpenny and Paul Johnson then talked about CBMC Leadership Coaching Training. The difference between counseling, mentoring, and coaching was discussed. If a person is looking back, they may be in need of counseling. Mentoring is sharing life experiences from the mentor to mentee so that the mentee won’t have to make the same mistakes and can learn what works in life. Coaching is asking good open ended questions to help a person grow and change into the person God is calling them to be.

The remaining time was spent in solo retreat, spending time alone with God. Not only talking to God, but more specifically, listening to what God is telling each of us individually about the changes and direction He wants us to take with our lives. Gary Tenpenny met one on one with men to help them take the next step that God was calling them to be and do for Kingdom purpose.
